What 전입신고 Actually Is
전입신고 (jeonipsingo, "move-in report") is the official filing that registers your current address with the Korean government. It's not optional paperwork — it's how Korea knows where you legally reside, and for renters it has a second, critical function: combined with 확정일자 (a fixed date stamp on your lease), it gives your deposit legal priority if your landlord defaults or the property is seized. Who Needs to File
Any foreign resident registered under Korea's immigration system — holders of a valid visa with an Alien Registration Card (ARC) — needs to update their registered address whenever they move, the same as Korean citizens filing 전입신고 at a 주민센터. Short-term visa holders without an ARC (tourist stays, for example) don't go through this process, since they aren't registered residents in the first place.
Where to File
Two options, depending on your situation:
- Local Immigration Office — foreign residents report address changes to Korea Immigration (via HiKorea or in person), which is the ARC-holder equivalent of 전입신고.
- 주민센터 (community center) — in many districts, you can also file directly at the local 주민센터 covering your new address, especially for the 확정일자 lease-date stamp that runs alongside it.
Confirm with your specific district (구) which office handles foreign-resident address changes — some districts route the ARC address update through immigration exclusively, others accept it at the 주민센터 counter with your ARC. Your leasing agent should know the current process for that district.

- Your lease agreement (원본, the original — not a copy)
- Passport, as backup ID
Timing: Do It Immediately After Move-In
File as soon as possible after moving in — same day or next business day, not "sometime this month." The legal priority 확정일자 + 전입신고 gives your deposit only starts from the date you file, and any competing claim registered against the property before your filing date takes precedence over yours.
What Happens If You Don't File
Beyond losing deposit-priority protection, an un-updated address can cause downstream issues — mail and official notices (including ones from immigration) go to your old registered address, and some administrative processes (banking, phone contracts, health insurance) check your registered address against what you claim to live at.
